Jim,

A better configuration is:
kernel 2.2.9, pcmcia 3.0.12 and ibmtr.c.patch.0518
Using 2.2.5 and tr225 does not give you the latest files (close though).

I suspect that your problem is in the config.opts file. (more precisely in the memory allocation for the card)
Take a look at the pcmcia doc on the web site for more information
Also, what controller does the gateway use, see the bottom of the pcmcia docs for a solution for dodgy controllers.
